nice day… nice commute… additional cycling I wouldn’t have got otherwise!

Watched the Boston Marathon while I rode the trainer…. fun to see such a great women’s race.

It is way too late to be getting outdoors on the bike…. lots of reasons, especially getting our health insurance squared away. To worried to be out there and not having a policy….
but, it was pretty nice to see that the more intense trainer sessions helped out. I rode 27 miles at a comfortable effort / heart rate and actually wasn’t moving at a turtle pace…. hopefully I’ll be outdoors a lot more from now on. But, when I only have an hour… the trainer works well.

So… short trainer ride. Had a few good “sets”, but in all feeling terrible about the day. Nutrition choices today were not so good. Balance. A hard sell to myself sometimes when I’d rather eat what I want and just train for hours ….

Trainer Ride. Watched the running of the Bluegrass Stakes and the 70.3 Ironman Championships in Clearwater, Florida. My trip to the Keeneland Race Track yesterday made me think a lot about the similarities between the training of these horses and what we try to do when training for a running or triathlon event.
Nikki and I were able to hang out with a horse trainer and his wife (an equine nutritionist) so it was fun to hear them make the comparisons first. He talked about his effort to train for a 5k and how it made him think about training the horses. I also was intrigued to hear the discussions about the “mindset” of a horse in a race, especially how they react when they are returning to the race track after an injury.
There was a lot to think about, hopefully as I learn more about horse racing I can learn some lessons that are applicable for us.
(To be honest, I was just as interested in the methods / styles of betting or handicapping. Which is probably a good reason I don’t make it out there much.)
In today’s races: Monba won the stakes race. That was a surprise as it seemed that all people talked about this week was Pyro, who finished 10th. Hopefully he’ll be ready for the Kentucky Derby. In the 70.3 Championships, Andy Potts was awesome as usual but the women’s winner (Mirinda Carfrae) was very impressive, running a 6:01 pace for the win. (The 70.3 was run in November, just aired today on tv.)
