Help Me Find my New Challenge!
New Challenge May 21st, 2008I’ve discussed a lot about how I didn’t want to spend a whole year focused on a single race… and so far it has went well. The last month has been a little crazy with the two marathons and last weekends century ride in Asheville, NC (podcast coming soon).
One thing I discovered this past weekend is that I’m not even sure I want to do another event this year. My soul needs something a little more stimulating, yet I would still like my body to be physically challenged.
So I am trying to find, create or discover a challenge that would meet this desire. To put is simply, I would like to do something that pushes my body to its limit, challenging my mental strength, inspiring enough to uplift my spirit and where it doesn’t require me to wear a race number or championship chip.
I have not come up with many ideas, but here is one: Ride Across Nebraska. I grew up in Nebraska and have lived in many places throughout the state, so it would be fun to try and cycle through the state (maybe try to run, bike and swim?) and visit those places.
Here’s a link to the google map of those locations: Ride Across Nebraska?
Please help me get some ideas!

Gary,
RAN sounds great, even RAGBRAI (Iowa).
But for some inspiration, how about volunteering at one of the aid stations for next month’s Race Across America (RAAM)?
TS 37: Sullivan, IN
TS 38: Bloomington, IN
TS 39: Greensburg, IN
TS 40: Hamilton, OH
TS 41: Blanchester, OH
TS 42: Chillicothe, OH
TS 43: Athens, OH
While it may not challenge your body (or perhaps it will if you work from beginning to end of the time station opening hours), but it will certainly invigorate your spirit.

Bill - thanks for this information. I will definately try and volunteer if I can… RAAM is out of my capacity to comprehend that challenge. I did a 400 km ride last year and the sleep (lack of) really got to me… can’t imagine doing that across the US.
