Kentucky Derby!
Uncategorized May 3rd, 2008I know that I am biased, as a Lexington, Kentucky transplant, but the Derby is an amazing event. Last year I wrote a post about Rags to Riches and how the athletic ability that these horses show is amazing to see…. (Rags to Riches was the philly that won the Belmont last year)
…. I am getting ready to head out the door to Cincinnati. I’m planning on running the Flying Pig Marathon tomorrow morning… and as I am catching Derby coverage, I’m feeling my heart race. I’m way more excited about the running of the roses today than lacing up my shoes tomorrow.
…. I’m not sure why, I don’t have any money on it. (Unlike the batchelor they showed that was placing 100k on Colonel John - his down payment for a house - yikes!).
…. but when the gates open, it is a sight to see when an animal is born to race. These horses understand what is going on. The more I learn about horse racing, the more I like the spirit these athletes display.

Ouch. Just saw that Big Brown won. Colonel John didn’t even show. Bummer for the dude who lost his dough! I can see why you’re inspired by the athleticism though! Did you see the acceleration at the end? Wow!

gary, like you I am a longtime fan of the derby(and 3x crown series). my girls and i were in the car listening on sports radio. thrilled for big brown and 8 belles. as they started talking about her going down we were glued to the radio waiting to hear. what a sad thing. my poor kids, no easy way to explain it and certainly hard to put a positive spin on it.
looking forward to hearing about the flying pig!

I actually missed the running
I was running (bad pun) late and had to go sign up for the marathon… but luckily had people calling with updates.
I will catch it soon.
The part of horse racing that I don’t understand is when situations happen like when 8 belles collapsed. There is all kinds of discussion around here about the upside / downside of polytracks (our track - Keeneland runs polytrack)… anyway…
The otherside of those situations is that these animals live to compete. If you caught the race, then you’ll notice it. I had chance to walk around the horse as they were being lead around and to the track here at Keeneland this year… I hate giving animals human characteristics, but they knew what was going on.. I’m sure of it.
Andreabona - sorry about you having to have that discussion with your children.
