Bike Storage Issues in Townhome.
cycling April 29th, 2008Kate just wrote a post about having troubles storing her bike. Nikki and I have had to make the decision to give one room of our two bedroom townhome almost entirely to storage of bicycles. I’d love to have a garage to store the bikes, but even more appealing would be a place to work on the bikes. Imagine Nikki’s excitement when I pull out a bike in the living room to begin work… yikes.
I do have to say that it is worth it. In addition to these bikes, we have 2 mountain bikes that are pretty much worthless at this point due to rust and poor condition due to them being on the porch at our former living space.

You may have a storage problem. I have a rack (wooden) similar to the two you have. It looks great but takes up a lot of space. I have 2 mountain, 2 road, 1 Treck Lime and 1 tandem. I went to vertical storage using Xport wall hooks. Handle bar/saddle width is the key to how far apart to space the wall hooks. Storing bikes in opposite directions will allow you to compress the space used. You can determine how far to space the hooks by putting the bikes up-side down on the floor and transferring the measure ments to the wall. Mount high on the wall and you can use the space below for plastic cabinets to store parts and tools in. Hope this helps.

Sorry, you mean there’s a problem with working on a bike in the living room (on the cream-coloured carpet)? I’ve been wondering where all those frosty silences at home came from!
Following up on arn’s comment, take a look at how I’m storing 5 bikes now. The dimensions for the hooks’ heights and spacing are on an Instructibles’ page that I’ve also linked through to.
